Growing Up With Tattoos & the Occasionally Odd Piercing
Tattoos we formally regarded as taboo, symbols of expression from bikers, gangs, and criminals. My father continues to remind, that while I still live under his roof the one thing he never let me do is get a tattoo. Besides, I do not intend to let someone puncture my skin to place permanent ink underneath it. Tattoos and body modification can also put your job opportunities at risk, while some businesses allow tattoos and other body art other impose a dressed with restrictions against it. As people age their perceptions change, so the tattoo or piercing you got at the young age of twenty-one may not be so cute or attractive anymore. Body piercings or tattoos may lead to regret or even a painful removal.
In today’s job market, employers are looking to retain the most skilled workers but with an increasing number of people getting body art effect candidacies and dress code policies. Legally, companies can impose a dress code as long as they do not discriminate against race, gender, color, religion, or national origin. These dress code in places like Starbucks are to place the customer at ease in their stories. There have been several incidents at Starbucks location were employees that refused to cover their body art such as tattoos and certain body piercings were terminated. Although, tattoos are becoming more social accepted in the workplace like twenty-seven year old, librarian Colleen Harris, she has one arm fully tattooed in pirate queen motif, which extend down her leg to her ankle. Harris says she feels no pressure to cover up and that her multiple degrees should speak for themselves. Some employers like Woodie Neiss believe that body art is a distraction in the workplace. The varying opinions affect each and a job applicant’s opportunity in a certain field or line of work.
When your fifty do you think you will still love Johnny or will you regret that little script word written wherever on your body. Tattoos and body modifications usually are permanent or leave scars if removed. As adults age their skin becomes thinner and collagen production slows as the body ages. This leads to wrinkles and slack skin, which detracts from the appearance of the tattoo on the body. Even some piercing like gauged earrings is permanent stretching of the earlobes and if done incorrectly the earlobes stretch so far that they have what is identified as blowout. As you age, you change as a person, your thoughts and interests change. These changes may make you regret your choice of tattoo, because that’s not who you are anymore. Some may turn to the laser removal or attempt to allow piercing to heal which may or may not occur. Laser removal for tattoos can be time consuming, leave scarring, and may not totally remove the ink. I might suggest think before you ink because you might regret it later.
Personally, I do not believe in extreme body modification and or large tattoos to express one’s self. Because, people’s interest and lifestyles change, they may go from an unruly college student to an educated businessperson who is applying to job position yet are not given the position because of a sleeve of tattoos. As I reflect on the subject, I realize if maybe people thought about their body art and a future with and without it, there would be less regrets.
